Tasik Chini's research centre now open to visitors - June 23, 2024

PEKAN: Visitors, especially nature lovers, can now make plans to visit the country's first biosphere reserve site Tasik Chini which was once marred by long-standing environmental issues. The Tasik Chini Research Centre (PPTC) near here offers tailored edutourism packages for the public to stay at their premises within the complex vicinity and explore the lake, and its rich flora and fauna.

State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said the negative perception about mining activities around the country's second-largest freshwater lake had to be put aside with the focus now towards getting people to return to enjoy the rich biodiversity here. "PPTC is prepared to receive visitors, including tour groups, to explore the lake and the nearby Orang Asli settlements.

"The lake is an ideal edutourism site to attract students and researchers. "Tour and travel agents can include Tasik Chini in their packages when promoting Pahang. "Apart from offering accommodation, meals and camping facilities for outdoor enthusiasts, PPTC provides boating, kayaking, and jungle trekking activities depending on the length of stay," she said at PPTC here today. Leong was met after the closing of the engagement sessions programme by Pahang State Parks Corporation to prepare the Tasik Chini biosphere reserve development plan.

Also present was Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Tasik Chini Research Centre head Associate Professor Dr Mohd Shazrul Fazry Sa`ariwijaya. Leong said that Tasik Chini had made headlines previously for the wrong reasons due to unregulated mining and land-clearing activities but now the surrounding areas were being restored and rehabilitated. "The mining has stopped so we hope there will be continues efforts to promote the lake.

"We cannot just sit back and wait for the Tasik Chini action plan to be implemented but must make effort to ensure the lake remains popular among visitors and is not forgotten," she said. On the engagement sessions, Leong said the three-day programme involved 18 agencies and four Orang Asli settlements nearby with the aim to return the lake to its former glory. "The Pahang government has pledged its support on efforts to revive the lake, and having a long- and short-term action plan is the best way to move forward. "The findings from the sessions will be studied before we develop a comprehensive plan by the end of this year," she said.

Fraser's Hill International Bird Race begins tomorrow - June 7, 2024

RAUB: Southeast Asia's longest running bird race event, the 35th Fraser's Hill International Bird Race will be held at the hill station here this weekend. The two-day event, starting tomorrow, is expected to attract some 400 participants from across Malaysia and neighbouring countries. State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said Fraser's Hill has recorded more than 250 species of migratory wild birds, making the highland paradise a first-class bird-watching destination in the region.

"The mountainous forests surrounding the hill station provide peace and comfort for the migratory species that fly across from other countries to seek the warm weather here. Their presence is a rare treat for bird watchers.  "The bird race event, held since 1988, aims to preserve nature and promote the hill station as a bird sanctuary. The event helps to promote the rich flora and fauna in Fraser's Hill to both local and foreign visitors. "Apart from the race, various other activities including bird photography contest, conservation talks by birding professionals, fun-filled activities for children and exhibitions will be held throughout the event. The bird race programme has become an ideal family getaway," she said.

Pahang govt securing rights to build Japanese anime monument - April 16, 2024

KUANTAN: Although Tourism Malaysia are in talks with the publisher of popular Japanese animation television series "Jujutsu Kaisen", plans to build a memorial for the popular anime character — Kento Nanami — will take longer than expected. State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said there were several matters that had to be ironed out especially involving copyright and intellectual property rights. "Tourism Malaysia representatives met the anime publisher in January to convey the Pahang government's interest, hoping to obtain the creator's consent to help promote tourism here. We have provided all the supporting documents.

"All communications related to securing the approval are done through an intermediary as the creator seldom appears in the public and does not want to be under the spotlight.  It might take some time to complete the required procedures especially, involving copyright," she said at the Malaysia International Tourism (MIT) Expo 2024 press conference here today. Last year, Leong told the Pahang assembly that a beach in Kuantan was mentioned by Nanami in episode 42 of "Jujutsu Kaisen", and the state government hoped to capitalise on this. Prior to his death in the series, Nanami had expressed his desire to visit and settle down in Malaysia, specifically Kuantan.

The state government had expressed interest to build a memorial for Nanami here in December last year and invited the creator, who goes by the pen name Gege Akutami, to visit the state as part of efforts to promote the state to anime fans.
