After impressive 2024, Pahang sets sights on more tourist arrivals - March 9, 2025

KUANTAN: Inspired by strong figures for last year, the Pahang government is now aiming to welcome 13.8 million visitors this year. Last year, the state recorded 13.7 million tourists exceeding the state government's target of 13.5 million tourists. The east coast state's tourist arrivals had been rising steadily, from 13.2 million in 2023 and 10.18 million in 2022. In 2021, it recorded two million arrivals only when the country's borders were closed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said Genting Highlands was the top among the 20 popular tourist destinations in the state last year, drawing 8.55 million visitors.  This was followed by Kuantan and Cameron Highlands with 2.28 million and 1.37 million visitors, respectively. "Taman Negara, one of the world's oldest rainforests, attracted 135,435 tourists in 2024 compared to 128,592 visitors the previous year," she said in a statement.

Leong said Pahang tourism had organised 35 major international events throughout this year, including the Malaysia International Tourism Expo (MIT) Pahang, which made its debut last year, and Southeast Asia's longest-running international bird race event, the Fraser's Hill International Bird Race, in June. She said apart from focusing on promotion campaigns, the state government had planned familiarisation visits where travel agencies and stakeholders from abroad will be brought to visit top holiday destinations in the state.

Leong said the state government also paid equal attention in promoting holiday destinations and featured them in all its campaigns, including brochures and social media. "We believe that all tourism destinations in Pahang, both old and new, have some form of appeal which gives visitors a reason to drop by," she said.

Talks on direct Jakarta-Kuantan flights in progress, says Pahang exco - February 24, 2025

KUANTAN: After Scoot Air, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, it is now Garuda Indonesia's Citilink that could soon offer direct flights between Jakarta and Kuantan. Discussions are currently underway between the Pahang state government and Citilink to establish direct flights to and from Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport (LTSAS) in Kuantan, with the aim of boosting visitor arrivals.

State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said Scoot Air had recently launched 14 weekly flights to Kuantan. "When Scoot Air resumed operations between Changi Airport and Kuantan in March 2023, they initially operated three flights weekly. This was later increased to four weekly flights last year, and now they operate two flights daily. I was informed this expansion was due to a strong overall load factor," she said. Going with Citilink, and should these negotiations come to fruition, Pahang would become the first East Coast state to offer direct flights to Jakarta.

Leong said that this development would benefit both visitors and workers and could help promote Pahang's tourism destinations to neighbouring countries. Meanwhile, she reiterated the state government's hopes of reviving the Penang-Kuantan route, previously serviced by low-cost carrier Firefly, and introducing new routes to East Malaysia. It was previously reported the Pahang government was in talks with airlines companies, both local and abroad to operate at LTSAS.

Addressing concerns about the decline in popularity of Cherating Beach, Leong dismissed the claims, stressing that the destination remained a top choice during promotional campaigns in European countries and had never been neglected. "During the Malaysia International Tourism Expo Pahang last year, the gala dinner was held in Cherating. The destination is always featured in our campaigns, included in our brochures and promoted on social media. "I recently visited Cherating with the Kuantan City Council and Motac (Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry) to assess the area at night. We have agreed to upgrade the infrastructure, including installing more street lighting and resurfacing roads. We consistently prioritise all tourism destinations," she added.

VM2026 promotional video to be reworked - Tiong - January 9, 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the promotional video for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) is set to be reworked to focus on specific zones and attractions in each state. Tiong expressed his team's dissatisfaction with the promotional video launched yesterday. Following this, he has instructed a complete overhaul of the video, which is still in the finalisation process.

"I have seen the promotional video, and it's all over the place — jumping between Pahang, Perak, Selangor, and Sabah, then back to Pahang. Jumping here, jumping there.  "If Pahang is promoting itself, it should focus solely on Pahang. Don't jump around. If done like that, tourists overseas will be confused. So, we want the promotion to be serious," he told reporters after the Engagement Session with Industry Players of the Central Region 2025 here today. Tiong added that the controversial 41-second montage video released yesterday is not the official promotional material.

"Yesterday, we only officially launched the logo, not the promotional video for Visit Malaysia Year, and it is not intended for that purpose," he said. Since yesterday, the VM2026 montage video has faced significant backlash, including criticism from opposition leaders who have urged the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry to withdraw it.

Critics claim the video is negligent for failing to include any mosques while featuring places of worship such as churches and temples. In response, Tiong urged all parties to avoid raising issues of race or religion and to refrain from politicising the montage video. "Don't politicise everything; it will only create confusion and pressure on our society.

"Don't do that, whether from the media, social media, or any other party," he said. Yesterday, Tiong assured the public that elements of mosque architecture will be incorporated into a more detailed promotional video for VM2026, which will be released soon. Source - NST

Pahang rep stuns with proposal for Asean's largest safari park in Temerloh - December 2, 2024

KUANTAN: An appointed assemblyman stunned colleagues at the Pahang state legislative assembly today with a proposal to establish the largest safari park in Southeast Asia. Temerloh MCA division chief Datuk Wong Tat Chee suggested that the state government boost tourism in Temerloh by building a massive safari park in the district's forested areas. "I believe this park will have a significant impact on the tourism sector, attracting not only locals but also visitors from all over, making it a prime destination, much like Genting Highlands," he said during his speech in support of the state budget bill at the Wisma Sri Pahang assembly today.

Pahang Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Sim Chon Siang (PKR-Teruntum), interjected by asking if Wong was considering taking over the now-defunct Gambang safari resort.  Wong responded saying that the Gambang site was too small and lacked proper attractions, unlike the large-scale safari park he proposed, which would be bigger than the one in Pattaya, Thailand. "The park would attract visitors from Genting Highlands, where millions of tourists come each year. It would be great if we could encourage them to spend a night in Temerloh. "This influx could also drive the need for four- and five-star hotels, potentially making Temerloh the second local council to be declared a city," he said. When Hassan Omar (PAS-Lanchang) suggested that the safari park be set up in Lanchang, which is home to the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre and the National Tiger Conservation Centre, Wong humorously responded that he had no authority to decide the location.

Thomas Su Keong Siong (DAP-Ketari) then proposed promoting Taman Negara Kuala Tahan in Jerantut, but Wong countered that while Taman Negara was ideal for observing nature, his vision for a safari park was to create an attraction on the scale of Disneyland or Legoland. Wong said that the safari park should cover about 202 hectares (505 acres), providing ample space for visitors to stay and explore Temerloh.
